The Rookery at Claybottom Pond in Smith Oaks is a part of a pond started in 1936 when dirt was needed for the railway bridge over the new Intracoastal Waterway. It also held the water supply for the High Island Community and provided water for the sulfur plant located to the east of the pond. Visitors to the Rookery in High Island’s Smith Oaks get a close look at egrets, herons, cormorants, and spoonbills nesting on the predator-free island from the platform on the northeast side of the pond.
People come from all over the world to experience the spring migration of hundreds of bird species. About 10,000 people from all 50 states and a dozen foreign countries visit Bolivar sanctuaries each year. In this photograph, waterbirds nest on the island in the middle of the pond. Alligators protect the island from raccoons and coyotes

Bolivar Peninsula, a 20-mile-long stretch of Texan land, is an inshore angler’s paradise. Nestled on the banks of Galveston Bay, looking out onto the Gulf of Mexico, it offers some of the best fishing opportunities in the area. A Bolivar Peninsula fishing trip will leave you wanting more, and luckily, there’s always more fish to catch in these rich waters.
The shallow waters of the bay are a sanctuary for prized inshore game fish. You can expect to reel in Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Flounder, as well as Sheepshead and Black Drum. A half day trip is normally enough time to find some nice specimens, and it will allow you to take your whole family on a fun adventure.
Are you looking for a bigger adrenaline rush? The deep waters of the Gulf are calling your name. Head out to the reefs for some big Snapper, Grouper, and Amberjack, or go further offshore to cast a line for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, and many more. A full day trip, or an extended full day, would be your best option if your interests lie in the Gulf.
When it comes to finding a charter, that’s a piece of cake. You’ll find them dotted all along the Bolivar Peninsula, so just head out to the nearest dock and choose. Galveston and Texas City are nearby alternatives with an even wider array of options.https://fishingbooker.com/destinations/location/us/TX/bolivar-peninsula
